Ocean Views and Fresh Local Flavors

We checked in at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort, where the open-air lobby looks right out over the ocean. While our room was being prepared, we enjoyed a delightful lunch at Hula Grill. The Cajun Fish Sandwich on a taro bun and the Baja Fish Tacos were absolute hits for our family.

Next, we decided to hike the Manoa Falls trail based on a wonderful recommendation from our server. Walking through the lush greenery was the perfect way to stretch our legs after a long flight.

Diamond Head and Portuguese Treats

Start your morning early with a 6:00 AM ticket for the Diamond Head State Monument hike. The path begins smooth and transitions into steep paved zig-zags, but the panoramic ocean summit views are well worth every step.

Afterward, head east for a well-deserved breakfast treat. Stop by the Leonard’s Bakery Malasadamobile at Koko Marina Center for warm, cream-filled Portuguese doughnuts. Furthermore, the coconut cream malasadas are pure perfection! If you visit the original bakery location, be sure to grab a cup at the Sunshine Shack coffee shop next door.

Tide Pools and Chinaman's Hat

Next, take a drive along the coast to visit the Makapuʻu Tide Pools during low tide. Watching sea turtles swim through crystal-clear water is a breathtaking experience. Continue your scenic drive past Kualoa Regional Park to view Mokoliʻi (Chinaman’s Hat). Seeing this landmark in person was deeply special for our family after reading the classic storybook together for years.

Food Trucks and Cool Treats in Haleʻiwa

By midday, arrive in historic Haleʻiwa Town for lunch. Grab a plate of famous garlic shrimp at Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck. Afterward, cool off with delicious shaved ice from Matsumoto Shave Ice—adding a scoop of ice cream to the bottom is an absolute must!

Finish your afternoon snorkeling in the shallow, calm waters at Shark’s Cove, followed by a relaxing sunset at Pipeline and Sunset Beach.

For lunch, head over to the Disney Aulani Resort to enjoy the open ocean architecture and coastal views. Afterward, drive out to Makua Beach for a quiet afternoon. This hidden gem offered us a tranquil shore backed by dramatic mountains, where we spotted wild dolphins and a sleeping monk seal.

Finally, end your afternoon with happy hour at Monkeypod Kitchen in Ko Olina. Their famous Mai Tai topped with sweet pineapple cold foam is unforgettable.

To ensure your electronics stay organized while hopping between the beach and dinner, consider using a Charging Cord Organizer in your day bag.

On your final morning, take a peaceful stroll along Waikiki Beach near Queen’s Beach to watch the sunrise and spot sea turtles near the shore.

Before heading to the airport, make one last ocean stop at Electric Beach (Kahe Point). While the shoreline entry can have rough waves, swimming past the break reveals clear waters and vibrant coral reefs filled with marine life.
