Have you ever wanted to explore a trail when it’s quiet, crisp, and covered in frost? Winter is a beautiful time to explore the outdoors. Next, I am going to share my favorite winter hiking tips to help you plan the perfect snowy escape. Whether you are heading to a local park or a deep forest, these tips will keep you safe, warm, and happy!

Many people stay inside when it gets cold. However, winter is actually one of the best times to hit the trails. For example, my recent trip to Mohican State Park was stunning. Here is why you should try it:

Staying warm is all about the layers. Additionally, you need to choose the right materials to stay dry.
I use a simple three-layer system. First, wear a base layer that pulls sweat away from your skin, like leggings and a turtleneck. Next, add a warm middle layer like a thick sweatshirt. Finally, put on a windproof jacket to stay protected. If you are getting ready for a longer trip, take a look at my Carry-On Packing List for a 5-Day Trip. This guide will help you pack everything you need without making your bag too heavy.
Pro-Tip: I learned that it is very easy to wear too many clothes! For instance, when it was 28 degrees outside, I didn’t even need a heavy coat—a warm vest would have been perfect. Learning How To Stop Overpacking is a great way to make sure you only bring what you actually need.

If you want to see wildlife, like the squirrels and “Red Jimmies” (chipmunks) I saw, you must be quiet! For example, my snow pants were way too loud. The “swish-swish” sound scared away the animals. Next time, I will wear quieter soft-shell pants.

Keep your essentials within reach! I used a crossbody bag to hold my water, tissues, and my Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo. I keep water, tissues, chapstick and may camera all within reach Ocalil Anti Theft Travel Bag is perfect for packing all my essentials for a hike for easy access.

When trails get steep and icy, don’t walk straight up or down. Next, turn your body sideways and side-step. This helps your boots grip the ground better and prevents slipping.
Turn your phone notifications to silent or “Do Not Disturb.” Additionally, this helps you hear the natural sounds of the forest. It also prevents a loud “ping” from ruining a peaceful moment by the river.
If you are hiking with others, stay a few feet apart. For example, if the person in front of you slips on a patch of ice, you won’t get knocked down with them!
To Maintain Organization for an overnight trip, a large bag is very helpful. While you wouldn’t carry it on the actual hike, the LOVEVOOK 40L Backpack is a great choice for your car or base camp. Moreover, if you want to make sure you are fully prepared, check out my Overnight Packing List: How to Pack One Backpack for a Stress-Free Trip.
Furthermore, using Proven Compression Packing Cubes is a secret trick to fit more in your bag. In addition, these cubes keep your clean hiking clothes separate so they are easy to find. Lastly, don’t forget to pack your Travel Essentials to keep your journey smooth and fun!
Experience the ‘Winter Magic’ of through quiet, frost-covered trails. Use these winter hiking tips to stay safe and warm while exploring the park’s most iconic views.

1.Pack a Post-Hike Cooler: Keep drinks and snacks like granola bars in a small cooler in your car. Also, this prevents them from freezing while you are out.
2. The “Transition” Outfit: Wear base layer leggings so you can shed your snow pants after the hike. I felt Destination Ready and went straight to the Mohican Market & Cafe for a custom sandwicch.
3. Watch the Edges: Be extra careful near cliffs or rushing water, like the swinging bridge I crossed. Icy rocks can be very sneaky.
