Before You Arrive — Getting to New Smyrna Beach

Flying Into Orlando MCO

MCO is a busy airport but very well organized. First, follow signs to the tram after landing — it’s clearly labeled and easy to navigate. Next, baggage claim is sorted by flight with clear signage. Additionally, rental cars are on Level 1 — all major agencies are there with a few smaller options across the walkway.
Alamo was fast and efficient with no line at the counter. Additionally, the pick-up process is smooth — walk across the street to the garage and choose your vehicle. We selected a Chevrolet Trailblazer from the mid-size SUV options. Pro tip: pack your phone charging cord on top of your bag so you can connect immediately and access GPS.
Flying Home From Sanford Airport
This is the biggest travel tip of the entire trip — fly home from Sanford International Airport if at all possible. After experiencing MCO, Sanford was a revelation. Small, clearly labeled, fast TSA with zero line, and an easy rental car return. As a result, the departure day stress was essentially zero.

Day 1 — Arrival, Flagler Avenue, and Chase's on the Beach
Your first day sets the tone. After landing at MCO, picking up your rental car, and driving about an hour to New Smyrna Beach, check into your VRBO and get oriented.
Flagler Avenue Shopping

Even on a rainy windy day, Flagler Avenue delivers. The boutiques here are genuinely unique — Charmed by the Sea is worth a stop for casual beach-feel outfits and one-of-a-kind pieces. Additionally, art studios and antique shops line the street with a wide variety of styles and price points.
Dinner at Chase's on the Beach

End your first day here — it’s the best meal of the trip. First, order the chicken nachos. The homemade cheese sauce is absolutely incredible — the best nachos I’ve ever had. Next, split the cheesesteak. Additionally, the homemade potato chips are fantastic. The setting directly on the water is stunning even on a rough weather day. Chase’s on the Beach restaurant.
Day 2 — Manatees, French Pastries, and the Treehouse an Excellent Day For New Smyrna Beach itinerary
Morning Manatee Walk

Start the morning with a walk to the park boardwalk near the VRBO. The path goes out around the water and on a calm morning you’ll spot manatees close to the boat docks and dolphins throughout the inlet. Additionally, bring something to sit on — you’ll want to stay longer than planned. It’s one of the most peaceful experiences of the trip.
Mon Delice French Bakery

After your morning walk, drive over for coffee and a croissant at Mon Delice French Bakery. Huge, flaky, and delicious. Additionally, the sweet treats and pastry options are excellent. A perfect slow morning start before exploring.
Afternoon Neighborhood Walk
The residential streets south of New Smyrna in Bethune Beach are beautiful — homes in every color and style, quiet streets, and a completely different feel than the busier areas further north. We walked several miles and loved every minute. Additionally, driving north briefly confirmed our decision to stay south — the condo-heavy area felt far less relaxed.
Dinner at Norwoods Treehouse Restaurant

One of the most unique dining experiences on the trip, Norwood Eatery & Bar. First, choose the treehouse seating — don’t settle for inside. Next, order the stuffed haddock — crab cake stuffed, flaky, and perfectly cooked. Additionally, live music is available several nights a week. The vibe is cool, relaxed, and memorable. Go for the full experience.
Day 3 — Full Beach Day and Flagler Avenue at Night A Must For Your New Smyrna Beach itinerary

Mary McLeod Bethune Beach

Today is your big beach day. Arrive before 9am to set up and claim your spot. The beach is peaceful, beautiful, and perfect for a full day of sun. Pack a small cooler with sandwiches — it makes the day effortless. Additionally, take multiple long walks along the shore. There’s something deeply restorative about hours of waves, sand between your toes, and nowhere to be.
Sun protection is essential for a full beach day. ➡ Tropic SPF 30 Sunscreen — broad spectrum protection, lightweight, moisturizing]

Flagler Avenue on a Friday Evening

The same street you visited on a calm weekday transforms completely on a Friday evening. Sidewalks are full, live music spills out of restaurants and into street alleys, and the energy is buzzing. Additionally, it’s a completely different and equally enjoyable experience. Next time, plan for both — the calm weekday visit and the lively Friday evening.
Dinner at The Breakers Ocean Front Restaurant

Casual, beachfront, and right in the action on Flagler Avenue, Breakers. Beach shack atmosphere with paper plates and plastic utensils — however, the ocean view makes up for everything. Additionally, arrive early even by 4pm it was very busy. Be patient and wait for a prime ocean-view table — it’s worth it.
Day 4 — Sunrise, Full Beach Day, and Riverside Park

Sunrise Walk
Set your alarm for 6:40am. The sunrise at 7:03 was one of the most majestic moments of the entire trip. Additionally, the beach is nearly empty at that hour which makes it even more peaceful and special. This is non-negotiable — do it at least once.
Morning Manatee Check

After sunrise, walk down to the park docks — three or four manatees were close to the boats in the morning. Additionally, the light at that time of day makes for beautiful photos.
Full Beach Day

Set up early, stay all day. The Sun Ninja beach tent is a game changer for a long beach day — easy setup, wind resistant, and provides real shade while still letting the breeze through. Additionally, the BAY LAUREL Turkish Beach Towel is excellent for the beach — thin, soft, and sand shakes off easily.

➡️ ToKismet Mesh Beach Tote — fits towel, sunscreen, snacks and hat, sand falls through the mesh bottom
Riverside Park Evening

Before dinner, head to Riverside Park in New Smyrna. This is a hidden gem. Sit along the river and watch boats of all sizes pass by — small fishing boats to impressive yachts. Additionally, during our visit the Canal Street Historic District Car Show was happening nearby with an incredible lineup of classic cars. A perfect relaxed evening activity.
Dinner at Mi Mexico
Good solid Mexican food with great margaritas after a long beach day. Comfortable, reliable, and satisfying. Note that parking near the restaurant can be very busy — be prepared to walk a few blocks or pay for parking.
Day 5 — Sanford River Walk and Departure a Great New Smyrna Beach Itinerary
Don’t rush your last morning. First, take a final sunrise walk to the beach. Next, spend a few hours by the pool. Then head toward Sanford with time to spare for the RiverWalk before your flight.
Sanford RiverWalk

Downtown Sanford surprised us completely. The RiverWalk along Lake Monroe has beautiful clear water views, a marina full of sailboats, historic information along the walkway, and swings under pergolas that are the perfect spot to sit and soak it all in. Additionally, the downtown area on a Sunday afternoon was buzzing with people enjoying outdoor restaurant seating. Give yourself more time here than you think you need.

Sanford International Airport

After MCO, Sanford felt like a gift. Small, clearly labeled, fast TSA, easy rental car return, and friendly Allegiant counter service. As a result, the entire departure experience was smooth and stress-free. Next time, I’m booking Sanford intentionally from the start.
