Planning a lake vacation with teens and young adults sounds simple until you actually try to book one. You want everyone relaxed, but you also want everyone engaged. No one wants three days of bored sighing and phone scrolling on the porch.

After a recent trip with my husband, our three kids, and our oldest’s wife, I learned that a lake vacation hits a sweet spot city trips never do. There’s no packed itinerary, no rushing between attractions, and somehow that’s exactly what makes everyone actually want to be there.

By the end of this post, you’ll know how to choose the right lake and cabin, what to pack so you’re not scrambling, and which activities naturally pull young adults away from their screens. Let’s start with why this trip style works so well in the first place.

If you are in the planning stage you might want look at  Lake Cumberland Itinerary: Keys to an Amazing 3-Day Trip.

Why a Lake Vacation Works for Families With Teens and Young Adults

A row of blue and silver double-decker pontoon boats with water slides docked at a Lake Cumberland marina during a family lake vacation.

A lake vacation removes the pressure that usually comes with family trips. There’s no must-see list, no reservations stacked back to back, and no one checking the clock.

Natural Screen Detox Time

Additionally, a lake setting naturally creates a screen detox. When the view includes rolling hills, calm water, and a boat waiting at the dock, phones tend to stay in pockets without anyone announcing a rule.

Affordable Alternative

For example, activities scale to whatever energy level your group has that day. Some people want to swim and explore by boat, while others are happy reading on the porch. A lake vacation also tends to be more affordable than a resort trip or international travel, which matters when you’re traveling with a larger group.

Lake Vacation Can Be Adventurous or Chill

For us, choosing a lake vacation felt right because everyone could show up as they were. The young adults wanted adventure, we wanted relaxation, and the lake gave us both without anyone compromising.

How to Choose the Right Lake and Cabin

Before you book, think about distance. A 2 to 3 hour drive is the sweet spot for a weekend trip, since it keeps travel time from eating into your relaxation time. Our trip was a longer 5.5 hour drive, which worked for a longer weekend. We extended and left Thursday morning to gain an extra day.

Ask for EARLY check in for you Lake Vacation

Always ask if early check in is an option!  It change really make a difference in your check in day.

Read the Reviews:

Next, consider what the rental actually offers. Look for enough bedrooms for your group, a porch or outdoor space, and reliable WiFi (yes, eveyone appreciate having it as a backup). However, don’t assume “lake house” means direct water access. On many lakes, including Lake Cumberland, most homes are not waterfront. You can see the water in the distance, but you’ll likely need to drive to a marina to get out on it. Read the reviews on the property to learn what other guests had to say about it.  You can learn the most from this!

Questions Worth Asking Before You Book Your Lake Vacation:

  • Is there a private dock, or will you need to drive to a marina? Don’t assume; ask directly.
  • What’s the cell service like? Surprisingly, we had excellent service most of the trip, even tucked into a rural area.
  • What made past guests choose this property? Large windows, open living spaces, and dog-friendly policies were what stood out for us.

We booked through Vrbo and specifically looked for a four-bedroom property with a game room, since that gave everyone their own space to unwind in the evenings.

Best Lake Activities for Young Adults Who Want to Get Adventurous

This is where a lake vacation really earns its reputation. Young adults are naturally competitive, so kayaking turns into a race almost immediately. Paddleboarding is harder than it looks too, which makes it more fun, not less. If you want to brush up before you go, check out my Paddleboarding for Beginners guide first.

Rope Swing or Tubing Fun

If your lake has rope swings or natural jumping spots, those tend to become instant favorites. Renting a boat for the day is also worth the splurge. Tubing, exploring coves, or simply cruising to find a quiet swimming spot gave our group some of the best moments of the entire trip.

Unanimous Favorite- BOATING

Water trickling down a tall, layered rock shelf waterfall surrounded by green trees into the lake during a lake vacation.

Honestly, the boat day was the unanimous highlight for our lake vacation. We found a hidden waterfall, swam underneath it in life jackets, and floated there for what felt like an hour. When I asked everyone what their favorite part of the trip was afterward, almost all of them said the same thing: that waterfall.

In the evenings, campfire card games naturally took over. No one suggested putting phones away. It just happened, because the game was simply more fun.

What to Pack for a Lake Weekend (The Real List)

A tan mesh beach tote packed with summer essentials standing next to a white and brown travel backpack on a wooden floor for a lake vacation packing list.

Packing for a lake vacation is different from packing for the beach.  Mainly because you’re dealing with rocky shorelines, boat days, and unpredictable weather all at once.  You have to take everything with you on the boat and you don’t have the option to run back to the house to get it.

On the Water

A waterproof phone pouch is non-negotiable if you’re spending the day on a boat.  We purchased these exact waterproof phone pouces in 2020 and still use them on all of our water trips to this day.  Have help up over the test of time.

➡️ Top Choice Available on Amazon:  Waterproof Phone Pouch

Hawaiian Tropic sunscreen 30 SPF and ELF WOA Glow sunscreen 30 spf

Quick-dry towels make a noticeable difference too. They pull water off your skin fast and don’t leave you sitting in a soggy towel all afternoon. For more on choosing the right one, see my full Quick-Dry Towel Guide.

Reef-safe sunscreen matters on lakes just as much as the ocean, since lake ecosystems are sensitive too. My full breakdown is here: Reef-Safe Sunscreen Guide. Traveling somewhere where reef safety isn’t a concern? Check out my review of the Best Sunscreen for Beach Vacations: 5 Tested Products.

I was able to get nice color and avoid burn with my sunscreen plan.  I used a very combination of Hawaiian Tropic Sheer Touch Sunscreen  and e.l.f. SKIN Suntouchable SPF 30 for my face.

Clothing For Your Beach Vacation

A simple formula works best: swimsuit plus a lightweight cover-up you can throw on between activities. For ideas, check out Beach Cover-Up Guide.

One casual outfit per evening is plenty. Just don’t forget a light jacket—lake temperatures drop fast after sunset, even on warm days.

For relaxing around the cabin or navigating rocky paths down to the water, comfortable sandals make all the difference. In fact, if your weekend includes any hiking—even a short trail to a waterfall—the right footwear matters even more.

I tested my go-to pair on rocky, wet terrain and they held up perfectly. You can see my full breakdown of how they performed in my Best Sandals Guide, or check them out directly here: ➡️ View on Amazon: Skechers Reggae Trailway Sandal

For longer hikes, it’s worth packing real trail shoes too. I cover what worked (and didn’t) for a similar hike here: Mohican State Park Hiking.

Practical Wins on Our Lake Vacation

A light blue VRURC portable power bank charging a camouflage-patterned waterproof JBL Bluetooth speaker on a boat seat during a lake vacation.

A portable charger earned MVP status on our lake vacation. With no outlets near the fire pit and long days on the boat, we relied on ours constantly to keep speakers and phones running.  ➡️ Available on Amazon:  VRURC Portable Charger for iPhone

Bug spray is non-negotiable, especially for evening walks or hikes near water.

After-sun lotion is worth packing too, since a full day on the water means more sun exposure than people expect. My go to afters is Hawaiian Tropic After Sun Body Butter available on Amazon. Get my full sunscreen suggestions Best Sunscreen for Vacation: 5 Tested.

For sun protection during the day, I relied on two products that worked well together without feeling heavy.  ➡️ Hawaiian Tropic Sheer Touch Sunscreen  ➡️   e.l.f. SKIN Suntouchable SPF 30

For sound, a waterproof JBL Bluetooth speaker made boat day better. We brought two and linked them together so music carried across the whole boat.  ➡️  Waterproof JBL FLIP 5, Waterproof Portable Bluetooth

What to Leave Home On A Lake Trip

Anything that can’t get wet or sandy needs serious reconsideration, or at minimum, a dry bag. We learned this the hard way when our boat took on water twice and a shoe floated out into the lake (don’t worry, it was rescued).

Also, skip overpacking outfits for a lake vacation. You’ll likely repeat a swimsuit, and that’s fine. I fit everything I needed into my LOVEVOOK 40L Travel Backpack Review, and for hiking days, my Hoka Clifton 10 Review shoes were the right call.

Food Strategy for a Lake Cabin Weekend

A grocery run before you arrive saves you from scrambling later, especially if your rental is 20 to 30 minutes from the nearest town. Stock up on easy breakfast options, snacks that travel well in a dry bag for boat days, and ingredients for low-cleanup dinners.

Of course, s’mores are never optional. Pack the sticks and marshmallows ahead of time so you’re not searching for supplies on night one.

For coffee, don’t assume the cabin has what you need. Bringing your own setup, even a simple one, means mornings start smoothly no matter where you’re staying.

We prepared grilled chicken breast on the grill and sweet potatoes. So easy and was delicious.  The second night we grilled burgers, cut watermelon and had a side option of store bought potato salad.  Easy meals and fast clean up.

How to Get Teens and Young Adults to Actually Disconnect

A scenic cascading waterfall flowing over layered, tiered rock formations and mossy stone shelves, surrounded by a dense green forest canopy with calm water in the foreground.

Announcing a “no phones” rule almost always backfires. Instead, build in activities that make phones irrelevant without anyone noticing.

For instance, a kayak race naturally pulls everyone’s attention to the water. Campfire storytelling works better than you’d expect, especially once the sun goes down and there’s nothing else competing for attention. Even a sunrise walk, which sounds like a hard sell for young adults, tends to get more buy-in than you’d think once they’re somewhere new.

For us, phones disappeared the moment we found that waterfall. No one reached for a device the entire time we were there. That’s when I knew the trip had done exactly what I’d hoped.

What We'd Do Differently On Our Next Lake Vacation

Looking back, there are a few small tweaks we’d make. Packing ziplock bags would have been a simple fix for keeping snacks and small items dry and organized.

We’d also build in a little more research on dining options near our rental ahead of time, rather than figuring it out once we arrived. And while we loved the boat we rented, next time we’d ask about horsepower upfront, since a slower boat means less time exploring.

Would we return to this style of trip? Without question.

    FAQ

How long should a lake trip with young adults be?

Three nights is ideal. It’s long enough to relax without feeling rushed, but short enough that everyone stays excited the whole time.

Older kids, teens, and young adults tend to get the most out of lake trips, since there’s less stress around supervision near the water compared to younger children.

Yes. A boat is the single biggest factor in how much of the lake you’ll actually get to experience.  It is super fun and easy to RENT a boat. Go for it!

Summer offers warm water and green scenery, making it the most popular choice for this kind of trip.

Music, swimming, and shared playlists go a long way. Letting everyone add songs to a group queue kept our crew engaged for hours.

    Traveling With Dogs

Two fluffy, black-and-white doodle dogs sitting happily in the back seat of a vehicle on their way to a lake vacation.

If you’re bringing dogs along, plan ahead so they have their own space too. We packed a dog bed, familiar bowls, and a couple of new bones to keep them occupied.  ➡️  I love traveling with the Gravity Pet Water Dispenser I also purchased a couple new bones to help keep them busy while we were out on the boat. ➡️  Benebone Wishbone Durable Dog Chew Toy

Dog Travel Tip:  We also left them at the rental in short increments before our full boat day, which helped them adjust. Daily walks kept everyone, dogs included, happy.

Final Thoughts on a Family Lake Vacation

A quiet, secluded water cove surrounded by steep, densely forested hills and exposed rocky shorelines during a lake vacation at Lake Cumberland.

A lake vacation with young adults delivered exactly what we hoped for: real time together, without anyone needing convincing to put their phone down. If you take one thing from this post, let it be this: book the boat early, and don’t overthink the rest.
